My Journey: Final Report
Introduction
My name is Manfred Zúñiga, and this is my final report for the WP Credits program. During this project, I contributed to the WordPress Photo Directory by submitting original photographs showcasing Costa Rica’s automotive culture, including car events, unique vehicles, scenic roads, automotive gatherings, and other locations that represent this community. My project was titled “Exploring Costa Rica’s Automotive Culture Through Photography and Digital Communication.” This report summarizes my contributions, the challenges I encountered, the skills I developed throughout the project, and the knowledge I gained while documenting and sharing Costa Rica’s automotive culture with the WordPress community.
Teams and Projects I Participated In
I contributed to the WordPress Photos Team through the WordPress Photo Directory. The main goal of my project was to publish original photographs showcasing Costa Rica’s automotive culture, including car meets, automotive events, unique vehicles, scenic roads, and locations that are representative of this community. Through this contribution, I aimed to document and promote Costa Rica’s automotive culture while providing high-quality visual content that can be freely used by people around the world in websites, blogs, educational materials, and other digital projects.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the first challenges I faced was selecting photographs that met the quality standards required by the WordPress Photo Directory. Although I had access to different automotive events and unique vehicles, not every photograph was suitable for publication. I had to pay closer attention to aspects such as composition, lighting, sharpness, and compliance with the platform’s guidelines, especially avoiding visible license plates, identifiable people, and distracting elements.
Another challenge was choosing photographs that best represented Costa Rica’s automotive culture while also being useful to the global WordPress community. As I gained experience, I became more selective during the editing and submission process, improving both the quality of my photographs and the likelihood of having them accepted.
This experience taught me the importance of patience, attention to detail, and continuous improvement when contributing to an open-source project. Below are examples of photo submissions, including photographs that required revisions before being successfully accepted.
My Contributions
I contributed to the WordPress Photos Team by publishing original photographs that document Costa Rica’s automotive culture. My contributions include photographs of car events, automotive gatherings, unique vehicles, scenic roads, and other automotive-related scenes that showcase this community from a visual perspective.
Through this project, I aimed to preserve and share a part of Costa Rica’s automotive culture while providing original, high-quality photographs that can be freely used by designers, developers, educators, and content creators around the world.
Key Lessons from the WP Credits Program
One of the most valuable lessons I learned throughout this project is that contributing to an open-source community requires commitment, attention to detail, and a willingness to continuously improve. Every photograph submitted to the WordPress Photo Directory must meet specific quality standards, which encouraged me to carefully evaluate each image before publishing it.
I also realized that a single contribution can have a meaningful impact. The photographs I shared, featuring Costa Rica’s automotive culture, are now freely available for people around the world to use in websites, educational resources, presentations, and creative projects. This experience helped me appreciate the value of collaboration within the WordPress community and the importance of sharing high-quality open content.
Another important lesson came from the review process. Whenever a photograph was not accepted, I viewed it as an opportunity to improve rather than as a setback. By analyzing the feedback and reviewing the submission guidelines, I refined my photography skills and became more selective in choosing the images I contributed.
New Skills Acquired
Technical skills: Using the WordPress Photo Directory, applying submission guidelines, organizing photographs, performing basic photo editing, writing descriptions and alt text, and documenting visual content for an international audience.
Photography skills: Capturing vehicles, automotive events, scenic roads, and automotive environments while improving composition, lighting, perspective, framing, and image quality.
Soft skills: Planning photography sessions, critical thinking when selecting images, attention to detail, perseverance throughout the review process, problem-solving, and a greater appreciation for Costa Rica’s automotive community and collaborative open-source projects.
Personal Reflections and Next Steps
What I enjoyed most about this project was documenting Costa Rica’s automotive culture through photography. Having the opportunity to photograph unique vehicles, automotive events, scenic roads, and different locations allowed me to combine two of my greatest interests: photography and the automotive world.
Seeing my photographs approved and published in the WordPress Photo Directory was especially rewarding because it meant that my work became part of a global collection that anyone can freely use. This experience also encouraged me to pay closer attention to every detail, from planning each photography session to selecting and editing the final images before submitting them.
After completing the WP Credits program, I would like to continue contributing to the WordPress Photo Directory by documenting more automotive events, unique vehicles, scenic roads, and other aspects of Costa Rica’s automotive culture. My goal is to continue providing high-quality visual resources that represent this community while contributing useful content to the global WordPress community.
